Veracruz offers flavorful food influenced
by a collection of cultures

By Jenny Watkins

I saw a sign once in Atlanta that said "The world is a big pot of food and every race has to sprinkle their spice in it" (or something like that). And Veracruz Mexican Restaurant, a venue of several ethnic influences, has done just that (and done it well).

For the most part, Mexican entrees dominate the menu at Veracruz but since the owner is Cuban and the location American, Veracruz diners can enjoy a variety of tastes such as plantains, a black bean and corn medley, Cuban pressed sandwiches and even French fries- in addition to the typical tacos and enchiladas of course.

Because of its more diverse selection, yet homemade and authentic cuisine, "We attract a lot of Columbians, Mexicans and Cubans," says Manager Lucy Munoz.

Per Munoz' request, try the Paella Vercruzano, spicy Spanish rice with fish, shrimp, bell peppers, onions and cilantro; Carne Azada, thinly-sliced steak with rice, refried beans, lettuce, Pico de Gallo and tortillas; and for dessert Tres Leches, homemade vanilla cake drenched with three types of milk, surrounded by drizzled chocolate sauce and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. "We sell a lot of that," Munoz says. "It's homemade and very good."

The Tacos de Pescado (fish tacos) is also an excellent choice-the fish is seasoned beautifully and accompanied by a tasty sour cream mixture.

For this particular dining experience, wear your flip flops because you'll feel like you're at the beach, considering Veracruz's bamboo-constructed, thatched-roof bar and enormous ocean mural.

Visit Veracruz during happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. on Mon.-Sat. ($1.99 half margaritas, 99-cent draft beer and half price on well drinks). The restaurant is located at 2409 Acton Rd, Ste. 129 in Vestavia Hills. Its hours of operation are lunch 11 a.m. to 2p.m. and dinner 5 to 9 p.m. Mon.-Fri., and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sat.; 822-2789.
