April 24-27

ONB Magic City Art Connection

The 25th annual ONB Magic City Art Connection, awarded as one of this year's Top 20 Southeast Events, is the place to be for arts and entertainment from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Sunday. MCAC features 215 juried national & international artists; 40 art workshops for kids & adults; Corks & Chefs: Food & Wine Tasting Event (ticketed); live music and special performances; large scale sculpture installations; a cafe eatery and loads of fun on a gorgeous spring weekend. Linn Park. Free admission. 596-6306. magiccityart.com

Kimbrough and Tommy Womack
Will Kimbrough's solo records, This, Home Away, Godsend and his upcoming, yet to be titled release, betray an immense command of songwriting craft--catchy hooks, haunting, introspective lyrics and a tasteful resistance to making his own records a showcase merely for his guitar prowess. If that were all he did, people would know him now. With Tommy Womack. WorkPlay, 8 p.m. Thursday. $12 advance; $15 day of show. 380-4082. workplay.com

Ain't Misbehavin'
Enjoy this 18-piece band's extensive repertoire of Big Band era tunes during a concert and dance. Aldridge Gardens 7:30 p.m. Friday. $8 members; $10 nonmembers. 682-8019. aldridgegardens.com

Porgy and Bess Opera in Concert
Charleston, S.C., in the 1930s: Porgy, a crippled black man vows to save Bess from the ravages of the slums of Catfish Row. Gershwin's powerful opera is a raw depiction of African-American life in the 1930s. We present a semi-staged performance of this great classic featuring It Ain't Necessarily So, I Loves You Porgy, and the ever popular Summertime. Alys Stephens Center, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. $15-$65. 251-7727. alabamasymphony.org

 Wish Upon a Star
A benefit for the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Saturday. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. Live and silent auctions are scheduled, along with music from Just A Few Cats. Food provided by B&A Warehouse and Kathy G. Flower Stems. $150. 254-WISH. wish.org

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
Raising Sand is Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' first recorded endeavor, and will prove revelatory to fans and the media on two counts: first that it happened at all, and, more importantly, that it is as successful and illuminating as it is. Raising Sand is pitched three steps beyond some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country and the unrealized potential of the folk-rock revolution. Shockingly evocative, it is an album that uncovers popular music's elemental roots while sounding effortlessly, breathtakingly modern. bjcc.org

Zac Brown Band
Zac Brown's love for the great outdoors, cold beers and good friends, comes through in his songs, which are one part personal and sentimental, and another part raucous and humorous. If Jimmy Buffet had a younger brother playing music in the Georgia wild, he might be Zac Brown. WorkPlay, 9 p.m. Saturday. $10. 380-4082. workplay.com

Junior League Bargain Carousel
The Junior League of Birmingham's Bargain Carousel, a 1,000-family garage sale, raises money for the group's 37 community projects. Find clothes, toys, appliances, furniture, books and more. Century Plaza. $5 admission from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday. jlbonline.com
