GOOD TASTE
FiRE + iCE

Create customized meals without the hassle of cooking or cleaning at this distinctive Southside bar and grill.

I can say that prior to my trip to FiRE + iCE that I’d never before consumed a meal with Mexican, Italian and Asian components— a combination that is hard to come by under one restaurant’s roof.

That might sound unappetizing but once you’re given a bowl and free reign to combine any of the countless vegetables, meats, pastas and internationally-inspired sauces that you want, it’s hard to resist the urge to continue making and tasting more. It’s a fun challenge really—trying your hand at mixing ingredients to create a tasty dish. But if you don’t have any cooking experience, don’t panic. There’s a cheat-sheet board on the wall with pairing suggestions.

The instructions are easy: Stop by the salad bar to build a healthy appetizer and when finished, grab a bowl and fill it up with your favorite veggies, meats and sauce of your choice.

Then, drop off your creation at the large round grill (in the center of the restaurant) for one of several chefs to cook in front of you while you visit with others who are doing the same. It may not be the most intimate and romantic setting but it’s without a doubt entertaining and unique. While I waited for my food one of the grill chefs shouted out “Roll Tide!” and was answered by several cheers at surrounding tables.

“It’s a fun place,” says Manager Kim Morgan. “Everyday it’s something new. We have had people dancing at our bar, singing at our grill. It’s an interactive restaurant.”

I dined at FiRE + iCE for dinner, a $15.95 set price for endless chips and salsa, trips to the salad and entrée bars, rice and warm tortillas—not a bad deal for customers with hearty appetites. (Lunch prices are $7.95 for one trip to the entrée bar and $9.95 for unlimited trips.) The food selections change daily but you’re more than likely to find an average of 40 vegetables including red onions, chopped garlic, water chestnuts, broccoli, snow peas, squash and tomatoes; meats such as sirloin, chicken, lamb, salmon, shrimp, ground beef and calamari; and at least 10 different sauces including Sweet Chili, Fajita, Teriyaki and Alfredo.

I was too full for dessert but rumor has it that FiRE + iCE serves an outstanding Chocolate Tower Cake, Key lime pie, fondue and gelato—a sweet end to a savory feast.
