BHAM BUZZ
Journal 07.08

By Joe O'Donnell

The Hot List has become an annual summer feature that we have come to think of as a signature piece for Birmingham magazine.

Each July we bring our readers a temperature reading on some of the most exciting people, places and things in the Birmingham region. This year it feels downright feverish. We have found some very exciting people and important developments to fill our pages this month. The story begins on page 116.

The other signature mid-summer item (this column is starting to read like a drink menu) for us is our Summer Reading Special. For Associate Editor Carla Jean Whitley, this feature has become a labor of love. She spends quite a lot of time trolling through books by authors with ties to our home state, searching for gems to bring to our readers attention.

Within our Summer Reading package of stories (beginning on page 128), you will also find an interview with the celebrated author, former New York Times journalist (and currently professor of writing at the University of Alabama) Rick Bragg. We have also published an excerpt from Bragg’s recently released memoir about his father, The Prince of Frogtown.

We go to school a bit ourselves this month with a new installment on our annual Alabama College Guide, a 76- page supplement within this issue. We have tried to make the Alabama College Guide a valuable resource for high school students, guidance counselors (we mail copies to each high school in the state), parents, as well as college students, graduate students and professionals.
