Spring Hydrangea Sale

Kathy Mattea
(8 p.m. Thursday) Kathy Mattea, the beloved, Grammy-winning singer of such classics as “18 Wheels and A Dozen Roses,” “Where’ve You Been,” and many other hits says that her new album offered her a re-education in singing. That album, Coal, is a re-education for the listener, as well, a record that reshapes the way we think about music, reminding us of why we love it so much in the first place. With Elizabeth Cook. Under the Influence
(Thursday and Friday, 7 p.m.) Friedrich Gulda was one of the 20th century’s most eclectic artists, equally at home playing Mozart Concertos and improvising with a jazz combo. His Cello Concerto strays across all known boundaries. H.K. Gruber, famed for his comic masterpiece Frankenstein!, perfectly captures the jazz and pizzazz of New York, while Gershwin’s Lullaby provides gentle contrast. (May 8) Alys Stephens Center. $15. Bowfire
(8 p.m., Friday) The Bowfire ensemble of world-renowned musicians takes audiences on a journey that moves seamlessly from jazz to classical to bluegrass to Celtic to rock and world. That's my Mama
(7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday) The Comedy Club Stardome and More Than Conquerors Faith Church are partnering again for an upcoming weekend of clean Christian comedy, this time in appreciation to moms across the area. The Mother’s Day Weekend early show events, titled “That’s My Mama!” will feature, as follows: Friday – Opening Act/Host Ms. V, Feature Act Karen Mills and Headliner Sherman Golden Saturday - Opening Act/Host Ms. V, Feature Act Joe Hobby and Headliner Sherman Golden Sunday - Opening Act/Host Ms. V, Feature Act Karen Mills and Headliner Sherman Golden These early shows are non-smoking, and no alcoholic beverages will be served during their duration. YMCA's Annual Mother's Day Flower Sale
(8 a.m.-3 p.m.Friday) Shop the YWCA of Central Alabama’s 23rd annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale on Friday and help homeless children. Proceeds from the annual sale will benefit the YWCA KIDS Korner Day Care for homeless children. Flowers and special products will be sold outside under a tent at both the AmSouth Center in downtown Birmingham and at the RealtySouth Ray & Company building in Mountain Brook Village beginning at 8 a.m. Customers wishing to purchase flowers and gift items can view them prior to the sale at ywcabham.org. The selection includes a greeting card as well as potted flowers, cut flowers, vases and tote bags priced $5 to $50. Menopause the Musical
(8 p.m. Friday, 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday) Set in a department store, where four women with seemingly nothing in common but a black lace bra meet by chance, the musical pokes fun at things such as hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats and eating binges. Downtown Walking Tour
(9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday) Join Vulcan Park and Museum for an architectural walking tour of the residential portion of Highland Avenue. The tour, which will begin in front of Bottega Restaurant, will proceed east along the avenue and enlighten participants on how the avenue and its immediate neighborhoods developed from streetcar days to the present. The Garden Party with a City View
(7-10 p.m. Saturday) The Garden Party with a City View benefitting Bare Hands Gallery will be Saturday at Jones Valley Urban Farm on Seventh Avenue North and 25th Street. Everyone is invited to don their finest garden attire and enjoy live music from Bo Butler and the Nice Boys, and the White Oaks, complimentary drinks provided by International Wines and delicious food from local restaurants including Urban Standard, Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet, Lucy’s Coffee & Tea, Icon Restaurant, Cosmos Pizza, Bottletree Cafe, Healthy Connections, Rojo, & more! There will also be fun door prizes! Local artists will contribute elaborate centerpieces that will be on display that evening to help raise funds. Godspell
(May 8-18) An extraordinary portrayal of redemptive love, Godspell is an energetic, modern day musical version of the New Testament parables.
