Antique furniture
Antique dealers typically flock to the sales put on by estate and moving sale company Southern Estate Sales, LLC because its antique furniture prices are outstanding. In fact, you can oftentimes find deals for half of what you would pay in an antique store. The company works with an executor of an estate or homeowners who are simply downsizing and sells all of the contents in the homes including antique furniture as well as paintings, sculptures, linens and more. Check out southernestatesales.com for a list of upcoming sales and pictures of featured contents.

Baby clothing and supplies
The Birmingham Area Mothers of Multiples organization holds two sales every year at the Zamora Temple in Irondale where moms all over town can sort through 10,000 square feet of once-used baby clothing, beds, strollers, car seats, shoes, toys, outdoor play equipment and more for incredible low prices. The group only sells items in excellent condition and it pulls anything that is damaged. The spring/summer sale is typically in February and the fall/winter sale is coming up on August 22 and 23. bamom.org

Book sales
One of our associate editors purchased 36 books at the Emmet O’Neal Library’s annual book sale in Mountain Brook this past February—all for $7. The annual event gives readers a chance to buy pre-read paperbacks and hardbacks for less. And on the last day of the sale, shoppers can fill a paper grocery bag of books for $7. The library also holds monthly paperback sales on the first Tuesday of every month. Call 879-0459 or visit eolib.org for more information about the library’s book sales.

Consignment maternity clothes
I can’t imagine spending a fortune on maternity clothes, since they can only be worn for a short time. So it’s nice to know that there’s a store close by to purchase a few gently-used items for less. Some of the most frequent maternity clothing lines that can be found at Short ‘n Sweet in Edgewood are Mimi Maternity, Pickles & Ice Cream, Pea in the Pod, Japanese Weekend, Duet Designs, Babystyle, Gap, Old Navy, Motherhood Maternity and Liz Lange. And while you’re there, pick up a few outfits for your new baby, since the store also offers an even-larger collection of new and resale baby clothing in addition to baby gifts, artwork and more. 803-3289

Discounted eyewear
If you have an eye on a certain pair of designer glasses, but don’t want to pay full price, just wait for the annual half-off sale at Arteyes. During the entire month of May, customers can purchase frames (excluding certain brands) for 50 percent off. 870-3937

Dresses and handbags
Weddings are expensive so every good deal helps. Second Hand Rose
on Valleydale Road offers gently-used mother-of-the-bride and wedding dresses in tip-top shape for a fraction of what you’d pay in a boutique. The consignment store also gets a lot of traffic during prom time considering its selection of formal dresses with lines such as Morgan & Company, Jessica McClintock, Alfred Angelo, Cache and Seralina. Designer handbags from names like Louis Vuitton and Coach are also commonly found at the store. 987-7027

Kitchen supplies
I can hardly go into T.J. Maxx without buying something for my kitchen. How could I resist the shelves filled with bamboo cutting boards, gourmet chocolates, pastas, flavored oils, seasonings, ceramic baking dishes, cookware, aprons and grilling merchandise? And all for 20 to 60 percent less than what I would pay in a specialty store. Each T.J. Maxx store receives about 10,000 new items each week and much of that consists of gourmet foods and kitchen merchandise. Visit tjmaxx.com for a list of nearby locations.

Magazines for a buck
One of my co-workers mentioned that she buys Better Homes & Gardens at Dollar Tree. So curious, I visited Dollar Tree on Green Springs Highway and found that particular magazine in addition to Fitness. Supposedly, the variety of magazines offered is hit or miss, depending on the day you shop, but a great magazine for $1 is worth a look. Visit dollartree.com for a location near you.

World’s Longest Yard Sale
It might be worth the drive just for the experience regardless if you’re looking for antiques, household goods, collectibles, jewelry, crafts and more. But bring a U-Haul just in case you want to stock up on the inexpensive goods you’ll find on this annual 600-plus-mile yard sale that stretches from Gadsden to Defiance, Ohio. Visit shoplookoutmountain.com or call 888-805-4740 for more info.
