GREAT Dining (for less)
Cheaper coffee
You purchase coffee anyway, so why not buy it for a few dollars less? Primavera Coffee Roasters in Cahaba Heights hosts “coffee cuppings” every Saturday at 10 a.m. and the coffee they cup that day is $5 off per pound. Typically, three different coffees are offered for tastings so customers can have a variety to choose from. primaveracoffee.com, 969-1177

Day-old bread
Sure, there’s nothing like eating a warm baguette straight out of the oven. But, there’s no crime in heating up day-old bread, especially if you can save a dollar or two. Check out places like Continental Bakery in English Village, Savage’s Bakery in Homewood and periodically all Edgar’s Bakery locations for discounted day-old goods.

Discount gift certificates
I recently heard about BirminghamMenus.com and immediately visited the website to purchase a $50 gift card to Little Savannah for $33. You can’t beat $17 worth of savings anywhere, especially at one of Birmingham’s finest restaurants. Four times a year, BirminghamMenus.com offers discount gift certificates to 40 to 50 restaurants around the city, and they typically sell out in a matter of hours. Purchase a $50 certificate for $33, $25 for $15 and $20 for $12. birminghammenus.com

Food for a penny
Every Sunday and Monday, Publix offers a different Publix-brand penny item of the week. Customers can find a coupon in the Birmingham News Sunday paper, which reminds them to visit Publix and discover what the mystery penny item is. The intent is for customers to try Publix-brand items for a penny, which is permissible with the purchase of $10 or more.

Forty percent savings
Initially, you’ll have to fork out $24.95 for the cost of the Birmingham Weekly card but after that, you’ll enjoy 40 percent savings on food, sporting events, concerts and more at venues all over Birmingham that accept the card. Birmingham Weekly is constantly updating their website with new discount possibilities for card owners. Visit bhamweekly.com for an updated list of retailers and restaurants that accept the card.

Game day grub
On Belly Buster Mondays at the Birmingham Barons games (and there’s no exaggeration in the name), baseball fans can choose from several discount meal options, all of which include a general admission ticket. For $14 in advance and $16 at the gate, you can eat all of the hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn and soda that you want. For $20 in advance and $22 at the gate, help yourself to all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, polish sausages, hot & spicy dogs, bratwurst, nachos, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, peanuts, popcorn, soda and draft beer. Also, on Tuesdays, buy a hot dog for 25 cents and on Thirsty Thursdays, purchase sodas and beer for $1 each and hot wings for 20 cents each. barons.com

Pasta for less
No matter how extravagant the ingredients each pasta entrée is $7.95 on Monday nights at Silvertron Café in Forest Park. Also on Mondays, wine is discounted $1 per glass and $4 per bottle.

Smaller portions
If you’re not a big eater and hate wasting money on unfinished entrées, there are restaurants all over town that offer excellent smaller-portion kids’ dishes like at Village Tavern at the Summit and Brio Tuscan Grille in Brookwood Village. If you ask nicely, you might be allowed to order from the less-expensive kids’ menu.
