BHAM BUZZ
Journal 08.08

By Joe O'Donnell

I live in a house of girls. My son is away at college now, but when he was home full time he was safely holed up in what we called the bat cave. Interior designers might call it a man room or man cave—if they could get past the pizza cartons, cans and kitchen items such as dishes, glasses and cutlery, which traveled apparently under their own power but then were unable to escape.

Nonetheless, the bat cave was an estrogen-free zone, devoid of sisters, mother, compromised father.

The magazine this month is no such thing. We’ve put together an issue that revels in the company of women— full of what we hope you’ll find to be insightful glimpses into the world of women.

We asked women to share their experiences as mothers with us, with an eye toward the various solutions each has sought in blending work and family. We called together a group of 10 women to spend a few hours talking about the things, people and issues that really matter in their lives.

The Birmingham market research firm Marketry pulled that together for us, and the women met one evening last month at Los Angeles restaurant in Lakeview to hash things out. You can read excerpts from that conversation in this month’s issue. We also went to the youth soccer field for a neat photo feature that shows the life lessons being learned by kicking a ball across a field.

All in all, I hope you’ll find the women’s issue as heartwarming, fascinating, complex and emotional as the real thing.
