Drew Holcomb and Red Mountain Music
(Dec. 22, 8 p.m.) Raised in Memphis and based in Nashville, singer-guitarist Drew Holcomb is, on one level, the sum of those musically iconic cities, a songwriter/performer able to balance feel and craft in a way that can only come from someone informed at once by the likes of Al Green and Steve Earle. The Verve Pipe
(Dec. 28, 8 p.m.) In the Darwinian ego-system of rock ‘n' roll, survival depends on musical instincts, and they don't come any keener than those of The Verve Pipe. Since the early 90's, this formidable alliance of alpha males has thrived by making music their way, with two indie and two RCA albums to their credit. Some observers have had trouble categorizing The Verve Pipe's music, mostly because the band itself has steadfastly refused to be pinned down. However, fans have long understood what The Verve Pipe is all about: great songs performed from the heart. WorkPlay. $18 advance; $20 day of show. 380-4082. workplay.com
